| The Right Studio Reference Monitors Posted: 30 May 2011 02:17 AM PDT Are you thinking about getting a decent pair of monitors for mixing? There’s a couple things to consider. Room size and how much you can afford. Then think about a pair of speakers that have a bi-amp and those that have a single one. This is very important. The speakers each have a mid range cone and a tweeter for the high end. These are powered by an amplifier. The single amp system drivers both these components while the bi-amp system has a separate amplifier for the tweeter and another for the mid range speaker. The difference in sound quality is quite something. You will hear a unique tone from every pair of speakers. For mixing music it’s very important to have at least 2 different sets of reference monitors because they will sound very different from each other. Having only one pair means you should choose something that is very natural sounding. A good idea if you can is go to a music store that has several set up and give them all a listen, you’ll be amazed. How about a subwoofer? Without a sub you can’t expect to have a pro completed mix. You can make a great mix without one but you may be shocked to hear your mix on a big system that picks up that real kickin’ low end.
